Dressing the windows

I’ve Googled it but I just get trash talk and offers for watching the games but nothing helpfull. As of April 1st I just want to know who is still in

If you would like to perform well with your March Madness bracket pool, there are a select few essential factors to think about. You MUST consider a team’s momentum entering the ncaa tournament and how well teams did against the spread. A team’s momentum can carry a ncaa team all the way into the ncaa brackets for final four. So I am making some brackets for the March Madness tournament and I want to try some new things out. We are doing a traditional bracket and a bracket to see who can get the least points already. Any other ideas or modes of scoring that you guys use that would be fun?

It is a looking glass for human hope, excellence and positive social change. It is, in short, a microcosm of the human existence, with all of its exuberance, tragedy and triumph.

The excitement and tradition of “March Madness” as we know it today has been shaped by many significant events in NCAA tournament history: The first NCAA men’s basketball tournament was held in 1939 with the first championship game held at Northwestern on March 27, 1939. Only eight teams competed in two regions. Oregon defeated Ohio State in the championship, and the West region held a third-place game.

Although the NCAA tournament now determines the national champion, that was not always the case. Until the 1950′s, the NIT was considered a more prestigious tournament than the NCAA, and teams often chose to enter the NIT and bypass the NCAA tourney. Because of this dichotomy, two of the best centers of the 1940′s never met in an NCAA tourney.  George Mikan’s DePaul team traditionally entered the NIT, while Bob Kurland’s Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) won two NCAA titles. Several schools entered both tournaments. One such team, City College of New York (CCNY) led by Irwin Dambrot, won both in 1950. Ironically, CCNY defeated Bradley University in the finals of both tournaments. Another school, Utah in 1944, entered the NIT, lost in the first round, and then went on to win the NCAA title. Kentucky pulled off a similar accomplishment in 1949, losing in the second round of the NIT and then going on to win the NCAA Tournament.

In 1941, the East region added a third-place game into the schedule, and in 1946, a national third-place game was held for the first time; the game would be a fixture until 1980. In 1951, the tournament expanded to 16 teams, and in 1952, Seattle was the site of the first true “Final Four,” with both semifinal games and the championship game in one city. It was 1956 when the tournament was divided into four regions. Some of the most astounding and telling events in college basketball were to follow: North Carolina defeated Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas 54-53 in three overtimes to win the title in 1957. The legend of dominance emerged in 1962 when John Wooden’s UCLA team makes the first of 13 Final Four appearances over the next 15 seasons.

Reflecting the race and civil rights issues of the time, Loyola (Illinois) was matched up with Mississippi State in a 1963 men’s basketball tournament regional semifinal. Mississippi State, an all-white team, fled the town in the middle of the night despite protests from the governor and state police of Mississippi to play a Loyola team that features four black starters. Mississippi State overcame an unwritten Mississippi rule against playing integrated teams with a cloak-and-dagger flight to the North just one step ahead of a court injunction. Triumphantly, Loyola beat Mississippi State and went on to win the title. In 1966, Texas Western (now UTEP), with an all-black starting five, defeats an all-white Kentucky team to win the national title.

In 1973, with the championship game held on Monday night for the first time, UCLA behind Bill Walton’s 44 points on 21 of 22 shooting, won its seventh straight championship, defeating Memphis State. NC State, led by David Thompson, ends UCLA’s title run in 1974, defeating the Bruins in the national semifinals in double overtime.

The following year, the NCAA tournament expanded to 32 teams, and then allowed more than one school from each conference to participate. Prior to this ruling, the restriction prevented several great teams from competing in the tournament, including the 1974 Maryland team. They finished the season nationally ranked #4, yet lost the ACC Conference final game to top-ranked NC State prior to the start of the tournament. After that, the NCAA began to allow more than one team per conference to participate. In 1976, Bobby Knight’s Indiana Hoosier squad completed an undefeated season with a victory over Michigan in the championship game.  The Hoosiers are the last team to go undefeated and win the title.

The tournament expanded to 40 teams in 1979, and teams were seeded for the first time.  “Magic” Earvin Johnson leads Michigan State over Larry Bird and Indiana State to win the national championship.  The game drew the attention of millions throughout the country; its 24.1 TV rating remains the highest ever for a college basketball game and is still considered one of the greatest match-ups in NCAA Tournament history.

Expansion followed in 1980 to 48 teams, and then in 1983, to 53 teams.  In what many believe is the greatest Cinderella story in college basketball, North Carolina State’s Lorenzo Charles dunks the ball as time expires in the 1983 championship game to lead the Wolfpack to a 54-52 win over heavily favored Akeem Olajuwon and Houston. Perhaps no one figure in college basketball history more personified the spirit of March Madness than Coach Jim Valvano. His underdog North Carolina State Wolfpack did what many consider a miracle by making an incredible run through the 1983 Tournament. Culminating in the defeat of the highly touted “Phi Slamma Jamma” squad from the University of Houston, Valvano was rocketed into the media limelight and quickly became the symbol of exuberance and enthusiasm. He discovered soon afterward that he had bone cancer, and for a short time became a commentator for college basketball. Before his death at age 47, he was named the recipient of the Arthur Ashe award for courage at the first ESPN ESPY awards. It was at this time he announced the formation of the V Foundation for cancer research.

In 1985 the tournament expanded to 64 teams.  A Villanova Wildcat team shot a 22 for 28 field goal percentage to defeat Patrick Ewing and defending champion Georgetown in the championship game. Villanova remains the lowest seed (#8) to win the championship. In 1991, Duke upset undefeated UNLV in the semifinals and went on to win the national championship. In 1997, Arizona, led by Mike Bibby, Jason Terry and Miles Simon, becomes the first school to defeat three #1 seeds en route to the national championship, winning against Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky.

The NCAA Tournament’s popularity has grown to rival that of the World Series, the Olympics and the Super Bowl. CBS Sports in 1999 negotiated an 11-year, $6 billion agreement for television, radio, Internet, corporate marketing, licensing, publishing, home video and Hoop City rights for the Division I men’s basketball championship.

In 2002, the NCAA tournament committee developed a “pod” system for the first and second rounds.  The system allows the top four seeds to play at a site as close to home as possible, without regard to the school’s tournament region. In that year’s tournament, Maryland became the first school to defeat five former national champions on their way to win their first title. In 2004, the regions became known by the regional final’s host city instead of by their geographic names. The Final Four match-ups were set by committee prior to the tournament instead of on a rotating basis.  Connecticut, behind center Emeka Okafor, won its second title in six seasons. Last year, 2005, Roy William’s North Carolina Tar Heels led by Sean May, held off the Fighting Illini to win the title game by a final score of 75-70.

How often have you taken place in the typical pool for the NCAA basketball bracket? Better yet how often have you thrown a few bucks toward the NCAA pool? Mostly likely you have taken place in this activity or it has affected you in the workplace. As a small business owner what can you do? Try going with the flow and creating a March Madness Friendly zone.

Over $1.7 billion is expected to be lost in the workplace because of March Madness, but what have companies done to incorporate this seasonal event? There is only one industry that capitalizes on it and that is the entertainment industry. Why can’t you capitalize on this industry?

As a small business why not host a pool where your employees can be apart of a inner office pool setup by you. Offer an incentive to the employee that works the hardest to pick their team they expect to win before the tournament begins. . For instance the best sales person always gets the first pick of teams and the next best gets their choice teams. You have to divide the picks proportionately, but it would make things in the office more interesting. As the tournament progresses offer head on challenges in the workplace that correspond to who is playing in the NCAA tournament. If they win the championship they get a day off of their choice while the rest of the employees sulk. This creates a competitive environment in the workplace to work hard and have a better opportunity to get a day off they could spend with their family.

Creating excitement in the office isn’t a bad thing. Your employees become more engaged and can socialize with customers or their colleagues a lot easier offering a better work environment. A loss in work, but better job retention can be cost effective. Also, what about their ability to connect with your customers and relate in a better fashion then the rest of the year. This alone provides a better experience for the customer offering more potential money to flow into the company.

Lastly, have the big games on during a midday siesta. Make sure you offer an opportunity for your customers to join your company in watching the big game. Your customers would have a better understanding that you share the same interest. Offering wings and watching the game at your workplace can create a new way of promoting your business. Once again this is another way to enhance your employees and customer relationships.

If you’re like most people, the season has snuck up on you. March Madness is right around the corner. Everywhere, basketball fans are scrambling to find a way to watch their favorite teams battle their way through this popular elimination style basketball competition. So, do you have your plans set yet? Do you know who carries March Madness? Or how much you’ll have to pay to get it or even if it is available in your area?

One of the hottest new options is actually an online option. CBS inked a deal with Yahoo! in 2003 to allow March Madness on Demand for a charge of around $10. The idea was a hit with consumers and the subsequent years actually saw the fee wiped away. In 2007, On Demand games were available through Yahoo free of charge and this year looks to be the same. What if you don’t have a computer, though? Or you don’t have broadband or are still relegated to using a 14 inch CRT monitor (do they still make those?)

While you can get NBA League Pass through both Dish Network and DirecTV, DirecTV offers the Mega March Madness package; you won’t find this option with Dish. NCAA basketball is technically the purview of CBS, though they have licensed DirecTV to carry the majority of games. There are quite a few other options available to catch the excitement of March Madness, though.

If you are one of the computer challenged, you’ll find that you have to go that extra mile to get your NCAA fix. Switching to Direct TV is an option. This would actually give you the best benefits, allowing you to see the largest number of games. There are several HD options available, as well for those with HDTVs and HD programming packages. Another option is to catch CBS coverage through a local channel. CBS will continue to broadcast a large number of March Madness games from all different levels of the competition.

The most compelling reason to watch as many games as possible is for the talent level of the young players. We get to prepare ourselves for the NBA draft prospects for the upcoming season. As armchair scouts we are able to get a better understanding of what players will be the star rookies and what Juniors may abandon their college careers to try and go pro. March is by far the best month for basketball on all levels.

The single best option for your March Madness needs, though, is DirecTV. Subscribing to their Mega March Madness package is much less costly than some other options and you can get it in HD. If you don’t have an HDTV yet, now is the perfect time. Get your system well in advance of the beginning of the competition, though, so you don’t miss any of the fierce battles for dominance. Also, before you even purchase your television, contact DirecTV and let them know that you want to add HD programming, or you’ll be watching the same old TV on a larger scale. Just because you have an HDTV, does not mean that you’re watching HDTV! Find out from your provider what kind of install time you are looking at so that you can have everything in place before the beginning of March Madness. Getting your NCAA basketball fix is a great reason to upgrade that old TV anyway.

Real estate can be a great career, but it is not as easy as it looks to become successful. In my last article I talked about the reasons why you should become a real estate agent. Before I get into the reasons of why you shouldn’t become a realtor I want to go over the reasons why you should. First and foremost, the harder you work the more money you are going to make. Not only can you make a lot of money but there is no limit to how much money you can make. Another reason why you should become a real estate agent is that you can create your own schedule. With a flexible schedule you are able to sleep in when you need to, and go home to watch a basketball game during March Madness. I will get to the reasons why a flexible schedule is not always good a little later. One final reason that you should become a real estate agent is because you can have a major impact on a lot of people.

If you like meeting the needs of your peers then this may be the right profession for you. However, before you decide to jump right in, let me explain to you the reasons why you should think twice about becoming a realtor.

The main reason why you should stay away from real estate is because it is usually based solely on commission. That means that if you don’t sell anything, you don’t make anything. I was naïve when getting into the real estate profession about how expensive it was. I did not realize there were realtor fees every year, nor was I aware of how expensive it was to get a license. You also need to consider the amount of money you will spend in technology. For example you are going to want a good computer that you can bring with you at all times. Also, your cell phone bill is going to be higher than you wanted because people will be contacting you at all times. Really the most expensive part of real estate is the advertising. There are many different methods for advertising but they all seem to be expensive. Just letting all your friends and family know that you are in the business is expensive. If you are looking for a steady pay check, this is not the profession to get into.

There are always going to be great times and at times it will be terrible. However, the longer you work in real estate the more likely you will see a consistency in pay checks.
The second reason you should stay out of real estate is because of the amount of time you need to work to become successful. Not only will you be working a lot, but you will also work Saturdays and even Sundays to do open houses. You need to let your family know that you are not always going to be able to have dinner with them, because often times you are asked to show homes in the evenings once your clients have finished their work day. Now you do have the ability to say no on a showing or two, but it is hard to pass up when you know how much money can be on the line.

The third reason is that it can be very uncomfortable. Real estate requires a lot of prospecting which means you will need to leave your comfort zone. How willing are you going to be to knock on the next door, when the last person you met laughed at you? I have been laughed at more than once while going door to door and it can be very humbling. Are you willing to call For Sale By Owners? Do you have the drive to stand in front of a crowd to deliver a presentation about your company? I am not the most outgoing person, but to be successful in this challenging business you need to get your self out there, and understand that they are often saying no to what you are selling and not to you personally.

I believe that real estate can be a fun and exciting career. I can not imagine going back to an 8:00am-5:00am job because I have too much fun in this profession. However, before you jump into real estate please consider what you are getting your self into.

So ive joined a march madness pool but dont know how to play.

What do i have to know? I hardly watch basketball or follow it. I would assume you need some knowledge of the teams.

How do the brackets work, the pool im in offers 1 bracket for 10 bucks 2 for 15 and 3 for 20. So i could purchase 3 brackets for 3 different bets right?

I heard of some people picking by cutest mascot or just always picking the underdog. My boss Dr. Salary thought it was funny to pick winners by the average salary of its graduates. It was interesting, but there is no way Stanford is going to win. I predict Stanford will be a casuality of a first round upset. It’s almost that time of year. The NCAA College Basketball teams are turning up the heat, all gearing up for that final confrontation known as March Madness. The teams are preparing themselves, but there are things that the fan of NCAA college basketball can do to prepare for March Madness as well.

It is never too early to start thinking about what teams you expect to put in your brackets. While watching college basketball during these last weeks of the season, start thinking about who you expect to see in the playoffs. Of course, most of your friends, family, or co-workers are going to be watching the same games. If you want a leg up on the tournament bracket competition, you’ll need to go a step further. Take the time to watch some ESPN highlights of teams you’re not as familiar with and read up on their stats.

You might even consider subscribing to ESPN Full Court, if you have DIRECTV. ESPN Full Court will give you college basketball almost every night of the week (as many as 30 games a week). Not only will ESPN Full Court give you a leg up on your March Madness brackets, it will let you track your favorite teams and players while they fight it out for March Madness seeds and conference titles.

As you get closer to the big tournament, you need to prepare how exactly it is that you’re going to watch March Madness. Will you be watching the games primarily away from your home? Are you going to host viewing parties for your friends? Do you want to watch the games in High Definition? Do you want to be able to track several games at once? Making a game plan here is the best way to maximize your enjoyment of the post season match-ups.

If you’re going to be watching most of the games at home, or intend on hosting events and you have DIRECTV, you might consider the Mega March Madness package. March Madness is the best time of the year!

Do you need an easy basketball play to add to your offensive playbook? Coaches need to have several offensive set plays in their arsenal that they can use during the course of the game to get their best players good looks at the basket, to help their team stay composed and organized, or to take advantage of a defensive tactic or weakness of the other team.

As a coach, you need to understand the right timing and strategy for using a specific basketball play. This knowledge and expertise will make you value-added as a bench coach on the sideline and increase your team’s scoring opportunities during the game.

Knowing When and What Basketball Play to Call

To develop your basketball play calling skills and intuition, I believe you need to specialize in a limited number of proven basketball set plays. Offensive basketball plays that can be run from a variety of different offensive sets (1-4 set, 2-3 set, 1-2-2 set, 1-3-1 set, etc.) and used in a variety of different game situations (half-court offensive play, sideline out-of-bounds play, baseline under out-of-bounds play, etc.).

How will this knowledge and expertise in a core group of offensive plays help you and your team? From my experience, it made me a better teacher during practice. It limited the amount of valuable practice time I had to spend daily with my team repeating over and over our team’s offensive basketball plays and individual player assignments for each set play. During the game, it improved my team’s execution of the basketball set play called because my player’s had a complete knowledge and understanding of how to run the play properly and why the play called works.

But most of all, the knowledge and expertise in a core group of offensive plays gave me complete confidence in what I was doing as a bench coach during the game. Intuitively, I felt like I knew the right play to call at the right time to give my team a fighting chance!
